Actos and Bladder Cancer

Actos is a prescription medication used by patients to treat Type 2 diabetes.

The drug is known as a pioglitazone, and Actos’ main purpose is to increase the body’s sensitive to insulin, which would, in theory, improve the patient’s blood sugar levels.

The drug works two ways:

1. By helping the body better use the insulin that it naturally makes and

2. By stopping the liver from making more sugar than it needs to

While this may seem like a beneficial drug for those with Type 2 diabetes, what patients were not expecting was to develop bladder cancer while taking the drug.

Zoll, Kranz and Borgess, LLC is currently investigating the link between Actos use and bladder cancer, as we have encountered many reports of the serious condition in patients who were previously at a low risk for the disease.

Although Actos has been on the market for years, it wasn’t until August 2011 that the drug’s manufacturer, Takeda Pharmeceuticals, changed the warning label to include bladder cancer as one of the drug’s serious side effects for those on the pill for more than one year.

The FDA is currently performing a five-year study on the instances of bladder cancer on those taking Actos, which the attorneys in our office are watching closely.
